Why did you start the Main Street School of Performing Arts (MSSPA)?

The need for the school came to the developers' attention after Stages Theatre Company had served for two years as the theatre provider at the Fine Arts Interdisciplinary Resource School (FAIR). FAIR serves students grades 4-8. Students who were interested in continuing an arts-infused education after the FAIR school faced rather significant barriers because existing arts focused schools started in grade 11. Consequently, students could find themselves attending a number of schools before they could once again attend an arts-focused school.

The developers of the Main Street School of Performing Arts strongly believe that there is a link between student motivations, academic performance and social development. Two recent research documents were critical in inspiring and influencing the school - 1. Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development, 2. Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning. These documents support our belief that arts education programs have positive effects on student achievement and attitudes.
